Today we are going to talk about something that’s close to all our hearts, helping our students become confident, successful readers. You know that wonderful moment when a child’s eyes light up as they crack the code of a challenging word or get lost while reading a great story? That’s what we’re aiming for! One way we can get there faster is when we team up with families.

How Families Can Impact Reading Motivation

Lets start by doing some quick visioning: a student who not only reads at school but comes home to a family that’s excited to dive into books together. This atmosphere is primed for this student to flourish while reading, right? When families get involved in reading, amazing things happen. Students don’t just read more, they learn to love reading. And let’s be honest, that’s what we are really all aiming for. When students come home to a supportive reading environment, they benefit from many things:

  • They become more confident readers when they practice both at school and home
  • They pick up new words naturally through conversations about stories
  • Reading together creates precious bonding moments between children and parents
  • Students start seeing themselves as readers, not just students who have to read

Making It Work (Without Adding Stress!)

It is common knowledge that not every student has the privilege of coming home to environments like these. The home lives of students are often very different from the environments they experience at school. So how do we build partnerships with all families? Here we will outline some practical ideas and next steps for you to launch your family partnerships to boost students’ growth.

  1. Meet Families Where They Are
    – Every family is unique, and that’s what makes your learning communities so special. Some families might read bedtime stories every night, while others might share audiobooks during their daily commute. There is no one size fits all. The key is finding what works for your families and supporting it.
  2. Happy girl reading a book independently Keep Support Ideas Simple – The best reading partnerships don’t need complicated plans or countless materials, start with what is around you. Encourage families to share reading moments while eating breakfast (cereal boxes count too!). Listen to a book together on YouTube while in the car. Make your ideas fun, approachable, and no pressure.
  3. Share Wins with Families – A large portion of the motivation to try these ideas is to see that they are actually working.  Being transparent about what is happening in the classroom (both good and bad) will paint an accurate picture for families. This picture is the blueprint for the support needed at home.
  4. Equip your Families – Your at home partners are not teachers, so help them know what to do. Give them suggestions for what types of books motivate their child. Sharing simple strategies and tips to make reading more exciting, fun voices are always a hit. Celebrate ALL types of reading from comics to classics. Build these lines of communication open and judgement-free.
  5. Share What Success Really Looks Like – Success isn’t just about test scores and reading levels (even though these are important). It’s about students reading unprompted. It’s about families enjoying reading together. It’s about kids recommending books to their friends to read. It’s about reading being an enjoyable thing in their life.

A Bright Future of Readers

Creating strong family reading partnerships isn’t just about improving reading skills. It’s about building lifelong readers while strengthening family bonds. Every time a family member sits down to read with a child, they’re not just helping with literacy; they’re creating memories and habits that will last a lifetime.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. The best partnerships grow naturally when we support each other and keep our focus on what matters most, helping our students become confident, successful readers.

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic success, but what’s often overlooked is the emotional journey that accompanies students while learning to read. For many students, reading aloud or even silently in a classroom setting can trigger anxiety and self-doubt. In this post, we’ll explore practical strategies to create supportive reading environments that help students thrive.

Understanding Reading Anxiety

Reading anxiety manifests differently in each student, but understanding its common signs and triggers can help educators reduce and prevent anxiety to getting worse or even coming up all together.

Common signs of reading anxiety include in school or at home include:

  • Physical symptoms like stomach aches or headaches before reading activities
  • Avoidance behaviors such as bathroom breaks during reading time
  • Emotional responses like crying or becoming withdrawn when asked to read
  • Negative self-talk about reading abilities
  • Resistance to reading activities, even at appropriate skill levels

These signs can be caused by:

  • Previous negative experiences with reading
  • Fear of judgment from peers or teachers
  • Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes
  • Learning differences that haven’t been properly addressed
  • Language barriers or cultural factors affecting confidence

How to Reduce Reading Anxiety

Children reading books on the floorThere are strategies that educators can implement to help student with reading anxiety. Each of these strategies can happen in classrooms, small groups, or even at home to help reframe and reduce and overcome reading anxiety.

When the Student Feels Anxiety or is Showing Signs of Feeling Anxiety:

  • Implement a “pause and breathe” technique before reading sessions
  • Use partner reading or small group reading to share when reading aloud
  • Allow students to pre-read materials privately without missing on content
  • Provide reading aids like tracking tools or colored overlays
  • Create a signal system and support network for students when they need help

Classroom Culture and Environmental Adjustments:

  • Establish clear rules during reading activities to reduce additional comments
  • Create private reading spaces where students can practice
  • Use small group instruction instead of whole-class reading
  • Provide choice in reading materials and participation methods
  • Celebrate effort and progress rather than perfection

How to Prevent Reading Anxiety

Prevention is often more effective than intervention. Being proactive in education is kep to keeping and building confidence in any skill. Here are some proven strategies to build student confidence:

Building a Safe and Supportive Environment:

  • Use community-building activities to establish trust
  • Create a classroom culture that normalizes making and learning from mistakes
  • Develop a growth mindset vocabulary around challenges
  • Establish regular check-ins to discuss reading feelings and concerns
  • Implement peer support systems that foster collaboration rather than competition

Long-term Prevention Strategies:

  • Provide regular opportunities for private reading practice
  • Teach specific strategies for handling difficult words or passages
  • Build a classroom library that includes diverse reading levels and interests
  • Use technology tools that allow for independent practice
  • Create individual reading goals that focus on personal growth

Moving Forward

Teacher reading to students in a small groupThe key to addressing reading anxiety lies in creating an environment where students feel safe, supported, and capable of growth. These environments span beyond classrooms into homes, afterschool care, and even social spaces. By understanding the nature of reading anxiety, implementing immediate relief strategies, and working on prevention, educators can help students develop both the skills and confidence needed for reading success.

Remember that addressing reading anxiety is an ongoing process that requires patience, consistency, and flexibility. Each student’s journey will be different, but with the right support system in place, every student can develop a healthier relationship with reading. By focusing on these three key areas: understanding, reduction, and prevention of reading anxiety, educators can create a more inclusive and supportive reading environment where all students can thrive.

Reading is our superpower to ignite young minds! This Literacy Month, we’re not just teaching reading, we’re revolutionizing how students connect with words, stories, and learning.

Our Mission Turn Reading from a Chore into an Adventure

As educators, we have the power to transform reading from a mundane task into an exciting journey of discovery. These five research-backed strategies will empower your students to become confident, passionate readers.

1. Sound Detectives Master Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the critical foundation of reading success. It’s about helping students develop the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in words. By turning sound recognition into an engaging, playful experience, we transform a technical skill into an exciting exploration.

Strategy Aligned Challenge: Turn sound learning into a classroom mission

  • Transform phonemic awareness into a game
  • Use interactive activities like “Sound Spy”
  • Clap out syllables, play rhyming games
  • Help students crack the reading code through playful sound exploration

2. Phonics Power Build a Solid Reading Foundation

Phonics instruction is the bridge between recognizing sounds and reading words. A systematic approach helps students understand how letters work together to create meaning. By providing structured, explicit instruction, we give students the tools to decode words confidently and independently.

Strategy Aligned Challenge: Implement a systematic phonics approach

  • Introduce letter-sound relationships strategically
  • Use decodable books that reinforce phonics skills
  • Create a structured path to reading confidence
  • Systematically build word-decoding abilities

3. Vocabulary Expeditions Expand Word Horizons

Vocabulary is the gateway to comprehension. The more words students know, the deeper their understanding of texts becomes. Rich vocabulary development goes beyond memorization—it’s about connecting words to experiences, creating context, and helping students express themselves more precisely.

Strategy Aligned Challenge: Launch vocabulary-building adventures

  • Read high-quality books aloud
  • Engage in meaningful word discussions
  • Use visual aids to introduce new vocabulary
  • Encourage storytelling that naturally expands vocabulary

4. Fluency Fuel Read with Confidence and Expression

Reading fluency is more than speed—it’s about reading with understanding, expression, and enthusiasm. When students read smoothly and confidently, they can focus on comprehension rather than struggling with individual words. Fluency transforms reading from a mechanical task to an enjoyable, expressive experience.

Strategy Aligned Challenge: Make fluency practice exciting

  • Implement paired reading techniques
  • Use reader’s theater to boost expression
  • Encourage rereading of familiar passages
  • Transform fluency from a skill to a performance art

5. Comprehension Detectives Unlock Deeper Understanding

Preschool classroom listening to a story

Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading. It’s not just about recognizing words, but understanding, interpreting, and connecting with the text. By teaching active reading strategies, we help students become critical thinkers who can navigate complex texts and draw meaningful insights.

Strategy Aligned Challenge: Turn reading into an investigative experience

  • Teach active reading strategies
  • Create comprehension bookmarks with guiding questions
  • Practice summarizing, predicting, and connecting
  • Encourage visualization of story worlds

The Big Takeaway

This isn’t just about reading, it’s about opening doors to infinite possibilities. Every strategy you implement brings students closer to becoming lifelong learners.

Final Challenge This Literacy Month, let’s celebrate the magic of reading. Every small step brings students closer to becoming confident, passionate readers. Together, we can turn reading from a challenge into a thrilling journey of discovery!

Conducted by IFF Research and funded by the UK Department for Education, the 2022-2023 UK Technology in Schools Survey provides a detailed look at how digital technology is being integrated into schools across England. Key findings reveal that access to devices has improved and investment in connectivity, devices and digital tools is increasing. and teachers are becoming more confident with technology, but many still need more training. The report emphasizes the importance of long-term planning, more funding, and additional continuing professional development to improve the impact of digital learning.

Below, we discuss 4 key takeaways from the UK Technology in Schools Survey and how Seesaw aligns to the survey results.

1. Varied methods for evaluating technology effectiveness

How teachers evaluate the technology they use in the classroom

The majority of teachers surveyed (63%) reported that they do evaluate technology use, with classroom observations as the most popular method of evaluation. Most survey participants who did evaluate technology used informal or qualitative means to determine edtech effectiveness, such as observations, student feedback, or personal reflection.

Seesaw helps teachers and school leaders track the effectiveness of technology through engagement and learning insights dashboards, making the task of measuring technology effectiveness data-driven, seamless, and straightforward.

2. Digital strategy adoption is increasing at the primary level

From 2020 to 2021, the percentage of primary leaders who said they had a digital strategy increased from 38% to 55%. Digital strategies increase the likelihood that technology adoption and implementation are purposeful. This trend indicates that more schools in England are using technology in a way that supports academic and student attainment goals.

3. Mixed feelings about technology’s impact on pupil attainment

Primary school teachers were more likely than their secondary school counterparts to report that technology had made no difference to pupil attainment (46% vs. 40%). Technology in schools survey report: 2022-23)

As one of the only education technology platforms built from the ground up for primary grades, we understand the challenges that primary teachers face when trying to use technology built for older learners. In fact, we explored this in our Reimagining Edtech for Early Learners white paper. The white paper found that only 25% of teachers believe that edtech was well-tailored to the needs of young learners. Many tech tools currently used in primary schools were initially designed for university.

While some improvements have been made to the design and implementation of technology for primary grades, it’s no surprise that many primary teachers continue to see limited impact on the educational attainment of young learners.

4. Key investment areas align with Seesaw capabilities

Teaching related activity investments for UK schools Seesaw aligns with most of the areas that primary leaders identified as investment priorities. We dive into each of those areas below:

Support pupils with SEND

According to a survey we conducted in 2023, 95% of teachers believe Seesaw enables them to modify instruction to meet their students’ diverse needs. Seesaw Instruction & Insights includes tools built for primary learners that help teachers differentiate instruction and promote student choice to meet the needs of all learners. Learn more about our capabilities here.

Delivering lessons

Teachers deliver lessons with Seesaw’s flexible multimodal tools and ready-to-teach lessons. From the previously mentioned internal survey, 98% of teachers found Seesaw helpful for delivering engaging instruction and capturing evidence of student progress.

Teacher training and continuing professional development

Seesaw provides flexible professional development options for school leaders to ensure effective technology implementation and promote effective instructional practices. Learn more about our professional development offerings.

Tracking pupil progress

Teachers can track student progress in a number of ways with Seesaw:

  1. Pupils and teachers see immediate, auto-marked feedback with formative assessments.
  2. Teachers and school leaders can assess class progress against curriculum standards with learning insights dashboards.Seesaw Learning Insights Dashboard
  3. Teachers, leaders, pupils, and families can track progress with digital portfolios. Portfolio items and numerical marks paint a complete picture of student progress over the course of their primary school journey.

Planning lessons and curriculum content

Seesaw helps teachers streamline lesson and curriculum planning. Educators can use pre-made activities from the Seesaw Library or create their own. Teachers can also organize and categorize lessons for future use, making long-term planning more efficient.

Collaborating and sharing resources with others

Seesaw improves collaboration amongst teachers by making it easy to share activities and resources through Libraries. In School Libraries, here educators can browse, customize, and share lessons with colleagues. Teachers can create and organize collections of activities and resources, ensuring curriculum alignment and the exchange of best practices.

Seesaw supports co-teaching by allowing multiple teachers to manage a class, collaborate on assignments, and provide joint feedback to students. Additionally, Seesaw Instruction & Insights offers school and district-wide libraries where educators can share learning materials, promoting consistency across grade levels and subjects.

Intentionally designed to address learner variability, Seesaw’s adaptable content and tools help educators deliver personalized learning experiences that support each student’s strengths and challenges. Since Seesaw’s founding, our mission has been to provide equitable access to education through engaging learning experiences for all learners. Our intuitive multimodal tools are especially powerful in removing barriers for multilingual learners and keeping their most powerful resource, their families, actively involved in the learning process. Unlike many English Language Development (ELD) programs that focus solely on English acquisition in isolation, Seesaw supports a holistic approach that ensures multilingual students have the necessary support to succeed academically and socially.

Seesaw’s tools are certified for Learner Variability, Research-Based Design, UDL, and more, amplifying evidence-based best practices for multilingual learners. These tools drive academic growth, foster language acquisition, and build learner confidence. For years, Seesaw has been a vital asset in ELD initiatives, helping educators implement these research-based methods in their classrooms. From digital portfolios to creative tools and family communication, Seesaw provides a comprehensive platform that empowers both teachers and students.

Intuitive Tools That Empower Expression and Foster Accessibility

Seesaw’s multimodal tools enable teachers to support learning with visuals, video models, and audio support. Additionally, these tools provide students with alternative ways of showing their understanding. Sharon, a 1st and 2nd grade teacher, said, “Having many formats available for student responses makes a huge difference for my English Language Learners”. Supporting students’ language needs allows multilingual learners to show what they know without barriers, giving teachers actionable insights to move students’ language and academic development forward.

Differentiated Content That Meet Students Where They Are

ELD - Science grade 1 level 1

Providing students with “just right learning” is an end goal for every educator. Seesaw is an industry leader in this area. Through hosting a thousands of leveled activities, to customizable group assignment options, teachers are finding power in using Seesaw to provide students exactly what they need to learn at their fullest potential.

Out of 900 teachers surveyed, 95% said Seesaw enables them to differentiate content to meet students’ diverse needs.

Capture and Celebrate Student Growth Over Time

Seesaw class journal

Seesaw’s student driven digital portfolios revolutionize how teachers assess and document student progress through language domains. Unlike traditional portfolios, Seesaw creates a reflective space where growth is clearly seen and becomes a tool to showcase student achievements. This space is also uniquely shared with connected family members making it a transparent view for all stakeholders into student growth over time.

Bring Every Family into the Learning Loop

Family View of the Seesaw Journal

Family involvement is critical for student success, especially for ELL students. Valencia, a PK teacher, shared how Seesaw motivates her student’s best work. “Knowing that their families will see their work truly excites my students. When they are proud of their completed crafts, they place them directly into their backpacks. Their focus is to share that joy with their families. Seesaw fulfills that desire for students immediately.”  The learning journal by Seesaw ensures that learning extends beyond the classroom creating a shared space for families to experience their child’s growth.

Early Markers of Transformative Impact

The Seesaw ELD program has had a significant impact on schools even when they had a chance to just preview it. Educators across these districts are reporting transformative results for their multilingual students. Alex Isaacs from Long Branch School District has observed a notable increase in student engagement and pride, stating, “Students are empowered to participate and excited to share their learning with parents and families.” This heightened engagement is bridging the gap between school and home, creating a more inclusive learning environment.

In Vacaville USD, Cheryl Carter has seen a marked improvement in how multilingual students interact with their lessons. “Multilingual students engage by recording their responses and then listening/rerecording with enthusiasm,” she notes. This increased participation has led to more confident learners and more accurate assessments of student progress.

ELD - Newcomers lesson example

Teachers are also benefiting from Seesaw ELD’s comprehensive resources. As Carter points out, “Teachers don’t have to create support lessons; they are ready to use through Seesaw ELD Content.” This time-saving aspect allows educators to focus more on individualized instruction and less on lesson preparation.

Schools report that students from diverse backgrounds feel valued and seen as a result of the program’s cultural representation and multimodal tools. This has resulted in increased motivation and academic improvement. Several schools report increased test scores and English proficiency among their multilingual learners as a result of scaffolded lessons across core subjects.

As more schools adopt Seesaw ELD, the positive impacts continue to multiply. As classrooms grow increasingly diverse, the need to support all learners has never been more critical. Robust English Language Development (ELD) programs offer an effective solution by providing multilingual learners with the necessary tools to succeed. This blog delves into evidence-based strategies that form the backbone of an effective ELD program, essential in today’s educational landscape.

An effective ELD curriculum goes beyond merely teaching English; it embraces a holistic approach that addresses the comprehensive needs of multilingual learners. It integrates language development with academic content, values students’ cultural backgrounds, and ensures equitable access to educational opportunities, thus supporting students both academically and socially.

Evidence Based Tactics to Bridge the Language Gap

The strategies presented are not just for improving instruction and addressing language gaps, but also serve as a foundation for enhancing overall educational practices. As an educator, consider these tactics a springboard for developing your own innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Creating an Inclusive Environment

Fostering a culture that celebrates diversity and encourages participation is essential for creating a welcoming classroom. An inclusive environment values each student’s unique background, promotes a sense of belonging, and invites families into the learning process. Teachers can celebrate cultural events, use diverse teaching materials, create classroom norms that respect and embrace differences, and communicate with families in their native languages and provide resources to help them support their children’s education at home

Providing a Language-Rich Environment

Creating an immersive English language environment supports language acquisition by providing ample opportunities for practice. Teachers can incorporate activities like read-alouds, discussions, and writing exercises to immerse students in the language throughout the day.

Implementing Comprehensive ELD ProgramsSeesaw WIDA aligned lessons - ELD Blogs

Adopting structured ELD programs tailored to multilingual learners ensures that these students receive systematic and targeted instruction. Comprehensive ELD programs are designed to develop English language proficiency across all four language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They include well-defined goals, consistent instructional strategies, and materials that cater to different proficiency levels, helping students progress in their language acquisition journey.

Assess and Monitor the Progress of Multilingual Learners

Schools should assess and monitor multilingual learners’ progress through formative and summative assessments, language portfolios, and observational checklists. Formative assessments, such as quizzes and presentations, provide immediate insights, while summative assessments, like standardized tests, measure overall proficiency. Language portfolios track growth with work samples and reflections, offering a holistic view of development. Observational checklists document daily language behaviors and skills during various classroom activities. This will allow teachers to customize lessons to meet diverse proficiency levels.

Provide Collaborative Learning Opportunities

Encouraging group activities and peer interactions promotes language development in a social context. Collaborative learning allows students to practice speaking and listening skills using English. Activities such as group projects, peer tutoring, and cooperative learning tasks are effective in engaging English Learners.

Seesaw has taken these evidence-based principles and integrated them into the design of their comprehensive ELD curriculum. Let’s explore how Seesaw is leading the way in English Language Development

Leading the Way in English Language Development

Teacher with students in a classroom

At Seesaw, our journey to excellence in English Language Development (ELD) is grounded in a deep understanding of evidence-based instructional practices. We recognize that the educational landscape is evolving, with schools facing increasing demands to meet the diverse needs of students from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The WIDA standards framework defines four key language uses: narrate, argue, inform, and explain. This approach has been purposefully integrated into the design of Seesaw’s ELD content. Each lesson provides opportunities for students to engage in authentic, meaningful tasks that involve reading, writing, speaking, and listening across subject areas such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Research demonstrates that content and language integrated learning can lead to enhanced language proficiency, deeper content knowledge acquisition, the promotion of critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as increased motivation and engagement among learners. Seesaw is committed to delivering the best possible solutions to schools, and has crafted our ELD curriculum with precision and innovation.

The Seesaw team collaborates with leading experts in the field, including Dr. Kia McDaniel, Dr. Adria Klein, Dr. Tamar Posner, Dr. Ebony Terrell Shockley, and Dr. Tahira DuPree Chase. These consultants bring decades of experience and expertise in ELD, as well as content-area specialties, to the development of our comprehensive ELD curriculum.

For young learners, early literacy skills are essential building blocks. Educational institutions are responsible for implementing research-backed teaching methods that enable all students to excel academically and beyond. Early literacy development involves comprehending spoken language, expressing oneself verbally, decoding written text, and communicating in writing. Strong literacy skills are essential for continuous learning, civic engagement, and equal opportunity.

Educators, policy makers, and governments have been paying more attention to literacy instruction in the past few years, but it has always been a critical part of elementary education. Much of this attention comes from the post-pandemic effects; students not performing at grade level. Moreover, recent movements have highlighted the lack of evidence backing popular reading programs. Schools and districts are currently reviewing their literacy programs and searching for research-backed, evidence-based solutions for early literacy.

Schools are constantly looking for additional programs and will often adopt multiple solutions. This is because early literacy skills require ample, differentiated practice. Going beyond what the core curriculum has to offer enables students to stay more engaged and learning to be differentiated easier.

Seesaw’s early literacy content and instructional tools support schools’ needs for high quality supplemental curriculum. But don’t take our word for it. Hear from our community of educators the secrets that make Seesaw the perfect tool to unlock powerful early literacy growth.

How has Seesaw revolutionized word recognition activities and early literacy development in your classroom?

  • “I love to see growth in students’ reading and spelling. A few years ago I looped with my class which included a few students who were well behind reading level. After two years of doing a reading intervention with them, getting them more interested in reading, and using Seesaw for spelling and phonics pattern sorts and work, I saw so much growth in these students by the end of the second year.” – Amara B., 5th Grade Teacher
  • “Seesaw allows all my students to record themselves. This allows all students to engage throughout the lessons versus just listening to the teacher speak.” – Margaret O., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “Seesaw made small group instruction a breeze as each person had what they needed.” – Gwendolen G., Dyslexia Interventionist
  • “I am able to differentiate my students’ learning with Seesaw. Seesaw allows me to provide the perfect amount of support.” – Diane D., 4th Grade Teacher

These teachers have found that using Seesaw has been a crucial tool in dramatically improving their early literacy instruction. By adopting Seesaw’s easy to use platform and accessible tools, they were able to help their students get back on track quickly and easily.

How is language development practice made better when done with Seesaw?

  • “Our reading program has a really boring phonics piece that is all just pencil and paper. I created assignments to go with the program and the students are so much more engaged and invested in their learning!” – Julie B., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “Students can be assigned different activities based on their own learning pathways. Then use Seesaw tools to reflect and share. This allows students to progress at their own rate and use Seesaw to share their growth!” – Mckinzie K., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “During reading groups, I can work with students at different phonics levels, while others can be doing high quality Seesaw activities. For students that are new to English, Seesaw is a life-saver.” – Carly A., Year 2 Teacher

Early literacy programs emphasize practice and repetition. However, this may be at the cost of losing student engagement and interest. Seesaw enabled these teachers to reengage learners and provide them with specific learning opportunities tailored to their needs by providing them with the tools they needed.

How does Seesaw enable early intervention for all learners?

  • “With Seesaw, I was able to pinpoint specific at risk students, thus allowing early intervention and an opportunity to close the gaps much earlier in the year.” Crissy C., PreK Teacher
  • “The best thing about Seesaw is the ability to respond to and receive feedback orally. It opens doors for success along the way.” – Christy D., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “When seeking progress monitoring documentation in an early childhood setting, performance based tasks are where the action is at. Seesaw as digital portfolio is perfect for tracking their progress.” – Debra M., Instructional Coach

The ability to make faster, better decisions that support concrete evidence and learning artifacts is one of the key characteristics of effective teaching. Through Seesaw’s digital portfolio, teachers gain the ability to do just that making it the perfect teaching partner.

How does Seesaw foster a safe and supportive learning environment, particularly for students with diverse learning needs?

Seesaw administrator assisting a student on iPad

  • “Seesaw enables me to record video scaffolds and prompts so that children who are working at a level significantly below their peers have the support they need, this has an enormous positive impact on pupils’ confidence and self-esteem.” – Joanna C., Year 6 Teacher
  • “Loading daily Phonics activities in Seesaw for students enabled them to work independently using the various tools to show what they know, so I was able to further differentiate their instruction during small group time to meet their needs.” – Lisa W., 3rd Grade Teacher
  • “I use Seesaw for its accessibility features to help meet the needs of all of my different types of learning. Some prefer to speak than write. Some need visuals and the ability to actually move items around. My students really love doing phonics lessons in the Seesaw program.” – Katherine G., Reading Specialist

Providing equal access to content means removing learning barriers, especially for diverse learners. By providing students with a safe and supportive learning environment through Seesaw, they were able to see themselves in the content and access it at a level they were comfortable with.

How has Seesaw involved families in early literacy instruction and supported students’ reading development outside the classroom?

  • “We use Seesaw to post a video of reading a just right book and send it to their parents. Parents can see the text the child is reading as well as see their child in the video. They love listening to their child read on a daily basis and can see the reading growth.” – Carol J., Inclusion Teacher
  • “Seesaw has allowed me to make lessons based on our home readers that students can access at home. I engage with parents about how they are supporting their child with their reading. I hear students read, give feedback and engage with the learning even while at home.” – Maria-Anna M., K-6 Coach

Involving families in learning not only keeps them informed about growth on a regular basis, but also establishes a strong partner for at home support. Through Seesaw, these teachers strengthened their relationship with their families and fostered support for home learning.

Seesaw is a ESSA-Validated Early Literacy Solution

Seesaw’s supplemental curriculum is validated by LearnPlatform, a third-party edtech research company, to satisfy Level IV requirements according to Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The programs systematic evidence-based practices and explicit instruction of phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension align with research-based practices to accomplish this task. Literacy is one of the most critical foundational subjects for elementary students. Our youngest learners must get high-quality, evidence-based, equitable instruction that allows them to succeed in school and life. Early literacy is the foundation of acquiring language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Literacy knowledge encourages academic achievement, lifelong learning, active citizenship, and equitable participation in our 21st-century society.

In recent years literacy has received even more attention from educators, public policy, and government – putting it in the spotlight for many districts.  A lot of this new attention comes from the post-pandemic effects we have seen in reading & literacy data; students are behind grade-level in this critical, foundational area. Moreover, there have been recent movements highlighting the lack of evidence backing popular reading programs. At this critical time, many schools and districts are looking into their literacy programs and looking for evidence-backed, research-based solutions for early literacy.

Word Recognition

Word recognition is invaluable in learning to read as it enables swift and accurate identification of words, fostering fluent reading and comprehension. Proficient word recognition leads to reading fluency, allowing readers to focus on understanding the text rather than slowing down to decode individual words. Additionally, it contributes to vocabulary development by exposing readers to a diverse range of words encountered in text, promoting language enrichment. Purposeful practice of word recognition skills is more important than ever. With proficient word recognition, readers gain independence and confidence in reading, leading to increased engagement and enjoyment of reading. Overall, word recognition serves as a foundational skill that empowers readers to navigate texts with ease, unlocking the doors to enjoyment and lifelong learning. Given evidence-back strategies, educators can effectively support children’s development of phonological awareness, decoding skills, and sight word recognition–all components of word recognition–laying a strong foundation for reading success.

Strategies to Improve Students Word Recognition

Phonological Awareness:

  • Rhyming: Engage children in rhyming and rhyming games where they identify words that rhyme. This helps develop their awareness of phonemes and sound patterns.
  • Segmenting and Blending Sounds: Have students practice segmenting words into individual sounds and blending sounds together to form words.
  • Syllable Segmentation: Encourage children to clap or tap out the syllables in words. Start with simpler words and progress to more complex words as children develop proficiency.
  • Phoneme Manipulation: Have children manipulate phonemes within words by substituting, adding, or deleting sounds.

 Decoding:

  • Phonics Instruction: Provide systematic and explicit phonics instruction, teaching children the relationship between letters and sounds.
  • Word Families: Teach children to recognize common word patterns or word families Have them practice decoding words within the same word family to reinforce phonics skills.
  • Decodable Texts: Use decodable texts that contain phonetically regular words aligned with the phonics skills children are learning. Encourage children to apply their decoding skills while reading these texts.
  • Word Building Activities: Engage children in word building activities where they manipulate letter tiles or magnetic letters to form words. Encourage them to blend the sounds together to read the words they create.

Sight Word Recognition:

  • Word Walls: Create word walls with high-frequency sight words that children encounter frequently in text. Encourage children to practice reading and spelling these words regularly.
  • Flashcards: Use flashcards to practice sight word recognition. Review a set of sight words daily and have children read the words aloud or spell them.
  • Contextual Reading: Encourage children to identify sight words within the context of sentences or short passages. Provide opportunities for them to practice reading sight words in meaningful contexts.
  • Games and Activities: Incorporate games and activities that reinforce sight word recognition, such as sight word bingo, sight word memory match, or sight word scavenger hunts.

Language Comprehension and Development

Developing language skills early is critical for academic success and lifelong achievement, serving as the foundation for literacy growth. Oral language skills such as segmenting and blending sounds are strong predictors of word reading abilities. In addition, a robust vocabulary helps children to determine meaning from written text. Achieving optimal language development depends on access and opportunities to practice verbal interactions. From adult conversations and caregiver-child exchanges to content encountered on platforms like YouTube, children are exposed to various sources as models that develop their language skills. Early literacy is the foundation of acquiring language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Strategies for Language Comprehension and Development:

  1. Build Background Knowledge: Provide ways for students to build background knowledge through exposure to diverse texts, experiences, and discussions. Activate their prior knowledge before reading.
  2. Explicitly Teach Vocabulary Instruction: Teach vocabulary explicitly and systematically, focusing on tiered vocabulary words that are essential for comprehension. Use evidence-based strategies such as semantic mapping, word webs, and context clues to deepen understanding of vocabulary words.
  3. Demonstrate Language Structures: Implement structured literacy approaches that integrate phonology, syntax, and semantics, and more in a systematic and explicit manner.
  4. Expose Students to Verbal Reasoning: Engage children in text-based discussions to deepen comprehension and critical thinking skills. Encourage students to ask and answer questions about the text, make inferences, make connections to their own experiences, and support their ideas with evidence from the text.
  5. Broaden Students Literacy Experiences: Develop literacy knowledge by teaching concepts such as print concepts, genres, and text structures. Use scaffolded instruction to build upon children’s existing literacy knowledge and support their development as proficient readers and writers.

Early Intervention and Assessment

Early intervention and assessment ensure students growth is on track leading to long-term academic success and overall development. Identifying and addressing growth opportunities at an early age can lead to more effective outcomes and stronger interventions. Research shows that early intervention has long-term benefits for children’s academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.

Strategies for Implementing Early Intervention and Assessment:

  1. Regularly Screen and Assess: Use evidence-based screening and assessment tools to identify ways to support students. Certain tools can assess various aspects of early literacy development, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  2. Embed Observational Assessments: Conduct ongoing observations of student’s literacy behaviors and interactions with literacy materials in various contexts, such as during free play, small group activities, or reading time. Observational assessment provides valuable insights into children’s strengths, challenges, and progress in literacy development.
  3. Involve Parents or Caregivers: Engage parents and caregivers in the assessment process by providing information about early literacy milestones, offering opportunities for parent-teacher conferences, and encouraging home-based literacy activities. Collaborating with families ensures a holistic approach to supporting children’s literacy development.
  4. Progress Monitor: Implement ongoing progress monitoring to assess student growth and determine the effectiveness of interventions. Use formative assessments, such as curriculum-based measurements, to track students’ progress over time and make data-informed instructional decisions.
